How to organize your YouTube Watch later list
Watch later is under You → Watch later. Use it only as a queue: what you want to rewatch goes into a playlist for that subject, and what you've already watched comes off the list through the ⋮ menu.
Step by step
- On YouTube, tap You and open Watch later.
- Use this list only as a queue: send what you want to rewatch to a playlist for that subject by tapping Save on the video.
- Take what you've already watched or lost interest in out of the queue with the ⋮ menu on each video.
A queue is one thing, reference is another
Watch later answers “what should I watch today?” A playlist answers “where's that tutorial?” Mixing the two makes the queue grow endlessly and hides the videos you wanted to look up.
- Learn now: the course or subject you're studying.
- Consult: how-tos you forget between one use and the next, like an Excel formula.
- Project: references for a trip, a renovation or work.
When you create the playlist, choose its privacy: private for just you, unlisted for anyone with the link.
How to shrink a queue of hundreds
- In Watch later, open the list's ⋮ menu and choose Remove watched videos.
- Sort by date added and start with the oldest: whatever's no longer useful goes.
- Move the ones you want to keep for reference into playlists.
